Assignment 2: Capstone Ideas
At this point, I have a pretty clear idea of what my capstone will contain. I have characters developed, story arch fleshed out, some environment designed, and working on the script and storyboards. Those should be finished soon, so after that I will use them to make a rough panel arrangement and a test run on the interactive clicking that will go on in the game.
The things that I still am unsure about, or that need some heavy work, are:
1) Some of the script ( I have a good idea of what I want to happen in the story and how I want it to end, but the smaller details and dialog that are killing me and getting from point A to point B)
2) Programming (I am definitely not a programmer)
3) Storyboards (They are numerous... every 1 page of script creates about 2-4 pages of storyboards, but fast and easy to make.)
4) Sounds, music soundtrack, voiceovers, etc (I know how to use Audition, but that's about it, and I have no connection yet with a band and voice actors. I can probably write the music, but I haven't done so yet...)
5) Alpha and Beta testing ( I find this to be an important step since I helped a few people on capstones before, and saw how bugs and glitches can undermine months or years of hard work. I don’t want this to happen to me)
6) Art things (I have character concept art done and storyboards, but I will need to complete the finished panels for the comic after I make sure the interface works. I will need to further develop environment and the cityscape. I will also need some small animations)
Sorry if this is getting wordy, but I feel it is important in understanding my place right now in the project and how to develop these 3 ideas.
One idea that immediately jumped to my mind is using 3D UDK or Maya to design my city. I sort of did this before in Mat’s UDK class, but I will need something more detailed this time and some interior shots of buildings. My plan is to make a fast easy model in Maya, maybe with simple lighting. Then arrange my camera to line up with my storyboard shot. Then use that render as a reference for my drawing or draw directly on top of it. This way, I can easy get the shots I need, but still have the tactile pleasure of drawing it, and my city shots will remain consistent.
The 3 other ideas I had were to bring in people to help particularly with the animation, music, and programming… that’s all I have right now. I am researching programs like After Effects and Flash to be a module for interface, but research is slow. I can have more direction with the animation and music, since I have a background in both.

1. In regards to the issue you are having with your script. I am currently working on my script as well. Since we are both mainly art oriented (or so I think?), I’m also running into this issue. What I’m going to do is have a couple of my writer friends look at it and give me suggestions on how to improve.
2. Yay I’m not alone! But I have a programmer who will be doing things for me on my capstone. You can always try using Flash. Ren’py, which is a free source Visual Novel program is another good option if you want to mainly do storytelling with pictures. Here’s an example that I did with it: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c312/FireDragon_IceWolf/lul.png
3. That’s great to hear :D
4. For bands I’m not entirely sure, but you may want to look into getting a composer it looks like. I can give you a few sites to try looking for things:
a.Voice Actors – voiceactingalliance.com
b.Composers – DeviantArt or indie Game making webforums
5. Yes, beta testing is really important! I would suggest trying not only to have a few friends test it out but a few selected individuals/peers as well. I plan to have at least 5 core beta-testers to start out with.
Also I’ve used some 3D modeling for comic stuff, makes things really easy – I used my UDK level setting for my comic I did in Powers’ class. It looks great and is very time efficient. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c312/FireDragon_IceWolf/adsfa-2.png
Feel free to contact me on Facebook if you have any questions about finding bands/VAs…I might have a few connections since I’ve dabbled a little in indie games already.
By the way, I chose to comment because I ran into this problem when I was first working on my capstone. Thought I'd share some helpful advice.
Thank you so much Steph! ;__; This had been very helpful.
DeleteI was also able to talk with Brat and she helped me to figure out I could use Flash for it pretty easier. I will probably be in touch with her. Thanks for telling me about Ren'py! I can't believe I never hear about that before...
I haven't talked to many about music yet but I have some musically talented friends and relatives I should hit up x3 I used to play the violin and alto sax long ago.. but I think it's too late for me xD I think NewGrounds also have some freeshare composers, but I haven't been on there in a long time.
For voices, I was thinking of using me and friends around me xD since it's easy, but that's a great resource. Thanks again!
Lady you're so awesome, you put me to shame. Thank Yoooooou!! It sounds like you have a lot figured out, but let me know if you need any help on... stuff xD

ReplyDeleteI sorta like your idea, though it still needs a little focusing. I've always been interested in games, especially the character design, development and story writing parts. I grew up playing games and I'm currently writing my own stories and characters that I would like to eventually become games, though for now I'm going to turn them into comic books.
I look forward to seeing more of your capstone, and if you need help with characters or story, I wouldn't mind giving some help.
Thanks, Would you mind telling me what needs more focus? I have a clear idea in my head, but I'm not sure I'm conveying it very well.

ReplyDeleteWow, that's a lot and honestly a tad confusing but if i get this straight you plan on telling your story via a comic or a 3d UDK level or maybe a combination of both just be careful not to put too many different tool sets into it at once. going between all these different medium my begin to detract from each other. better to do an epic project medium rather than a good one using many. As for the help with voice actors ect sure you'll find plenty of people in the class to help. All in all you seem to be in the same boat i am all this story but no idea what to use to tell it. oh and it wasn't too wordy at all lol
Thanks for the comment. What I want to do is make a point and click adventure/mystery game in a comic book format (ex: You had a panel of a street, you can drag your mouse over and click on a door, the door will open and the room beyond will appear in a new panel). The only thing I would use 3D for is to make a consistent floor plan. I only plan on using 2D art (photoshop) and Flash for the programming/animation. And maybe after effects... the programming is something I will really need to figure out, but I have a friend helping out now.
DeleteApparently I need to make this more clear... sigh...

ReplyDeleteI really like your concept from what you have told me about it. Check out "Game Maker" It is a game engine that helps people who have little to no coding skill still be able to put a game together.
ReplyDeleteBeing a point and click adventure I imagine that coding may not be as difficult as mapping out the branching dialogue and action trees that seem common with these types of games.

ReplyDeleteI like your idea because it's new--not many people have ventured into mixing comics and games all that much. There is one SNES game called Comix Zone that you might look at--I can help you set it up on an emulator if you like. It's more of a game than I think you're going to be doing, but still worth checking out.
I think one thing that would really help you is if you could get your script 100% done before you start on your capstone. Even if you know the writing isn't the best, editing is so much easier than writing is. At least for me anyway!
There's no shame in finding someone to do the audio for you, especially if you're not going to have the time to do it. And I know how you like to get picky with your art :)

ReplyDeleteI wasn't 100% clear what you were going for before I read a comment you posted to someone else earlier. I've seen your work before, and I know what you can do, so I can honestly say I'm pretty excited to see your finished Capstone. It sounds like you're putting a lot of work into it, and the idea is unique. I always loved reading choose your own adventure books when I was little, and I love games that give options, so this sounds awesome.
